These pages provide information on working in the UK for highly skilled workers amd will explain how highly skilled workers can come to the UK to work, train or study. Highly skilled workers can come to the UK under the Tier 1 - highly skilled workers scheme.
The difference between the highly skilled workers scheme and others, such as general UK work permits, , you do not need a job offer or detailed business plan to apply under the Tier 1 (General) - highly skilled workers scheme. When applying under this scheme, you will be awarded points based on a number of criteria as detailed under the highly skilled migrant programme. These inlude qualifications, previous earnings, United Kingdom experience, age, English language ability and available funds. Please see our HSMP section for further details of the new highly skilled migrant programme points based system.
When applying as a highly skilled worker you must meet the following criteria:
in the United Kingdom and want to make an initial application for the highly skilled workers category;
already in the United Kingdom under the highly skilled workers scheme and want to extend your permission to stay within this scheme
already in the United Kingdom under the highly skilled migrant programme, want to extend your permission to stay and are eligible to switch into the highly skilled workers scheme.
Highly skilled workers from India can, as of April 2008, apply under the highly skilled workers scheme, however, highly skiller workers from other countries will have to continue to apply under the highly skilled migrant programme until later this year.
