Below is a brief description of the different family and settlement visas with links to more information on each one.

uk marriage visa

If you are married to either a UK citizen or a permanent UK resident – such as people with indefinite leave to remain – may be eligible for settlement in the UK under the marriage settlement visa. You will need to meet the marriage settlement visa UK requirements and if granted a marriage visa will be able to work as soon as you settle in the UK.

unmarried partner visa

If you are currently in a relationship with a permanent UK resident you may be eligible for settlement in the UK under the unmarried partner visa. You will need to meet the unmarried partner settlement visa UK requirements and if granted an unmarried partner visa you will be able to work as soon as you settle in the UK.

fiance visa

If you are currently in a relationship with a British Citizen or permanent UK resident and you plan on getting married, you may be eligible for settlement in the UK under the fiancé visa. You will need to meet the fiancé settlement visa UK requirements.

uk ancestry visa

If you are a Commonwealth citizen with a grandparent who was born in the UK you may be eligible for settlement in the UK under the ancestry visa. You will need to meet the uk ancestry settlement visa UK requirements and if granted a uk ancestry visa you will be able to work as soon as you settle in the UK.

indefinite leave to remain uk

Indefinite Leave to Remain UK means that you are no longer subject to immigration control and is a major step in obtaining British Citizenship. Dependant on your current visa category, you may be eligible for settlement in the UK through Indefinite Leave to Remain, dependant on the relevant Indefinite Leave to Remain settlement visa requirements.

Obtaining British Citizenship is possible for people who already hold a settlement visa UK such as Indefinite Leave to Remain. You do not have to become a British Citizen but if you do you should read our obtaining British Citizenship section.
